Indigenous Business Month Showcase: Juunjuwarra Aboriginal Corporation and Biotrader

As part of Indigenous Business Month, the TNQ Drought Hub is celebrating First Nations businesses, people and organisations creating opportunities for stronger, more resilient communities across Northern Australia.

This month, we showcase Juunjuwarra Aboriginal Corporation, representing the Traditional Owners of Country at Starcke River in Cape York, Queensland, and its emerging environmental ecommerce platform, and portal into the world of the Juunjuwarra people, Biotrader.

Through their work to care for Country, restore habitats and develop Indigenous-led enterprise, Juunjuwarra have developed new ways to connect environmental protection with economic opportunity and community wellbeing.

Caring for Country and building resilience

Juunjuwarra Country encompasses a diverse range of 12 interconnected habitats, a cascade from highland rainforests and woodlands to wetlands, mangroves and coastal environments and out to the reefs. These ecosystems are important to the region’s biodiversity, cultural heritage and environmental health.

Juunjuwarra’s vision centres on repairing lands, saving culture and healing people. Its land and sea management work includes traditional burning, feral animal control, habitat rehabilitation and cultural observation to monitor changes across Country.

Healthy ecosystems and well-managed landscapes are important for building resilience to drought and climate change. Protecting vegetation, restoring degraded areas and improving the health of waterways and catchments can help maintain the natural systems that communities and agricultural industries depend on.

Juunjuwarra is also exploring how traditional knowledge and sustainable wild harvesting can contribute to land and sea management. Drawing on evidence of long-standing Indigenous food and resource management, its vision is to restore sustainable harvesting practices while supporting the health of natural habitats.

Connecting environmental care with enterprise

Biotrader is a 100% Indigenous-owned ecommerce  platform being developed by Juunjuwarra to connect investment in carbon and biodiversity products and stewardship with environmental and community outcomes.

The products take a rights-first approach, placing free, prior and informed consent and cultural governance at the centre of environmental initiatives on Juunjuwarra Country. They are designed to help fund land and sea management, biodiversity protection and carbon stewardship, while also supporting social and cultural initiatives.

By connecting environmental investment with local priorities, Biotrader aims to create a more sustainable funding pathway for caring for Country and strengthening Indigenous-led enterprise.

Building resilience through Indigenous enterprise

Juunjuwarra’s work highlights how environmental, economic, and social and cultural resilience are interconnected.

Investing in environmental stewardship can help protect natural assets, support local employment and create opportunities to diversify regional economies. For Juunjuwarra, caring for Country also means supporting the people responsible for its future. Strong communities, cultural knowledge and local decision-making are essential to sustaining land and sea management over time.

This aligns with the 2026 Indigenous Business Month theme, Local and Connected, which recognises the relationships between Indigenous businesses, their communities and Country.

By bringing together Indigenous leadership, environmental stewardship and enterprise, Juunjuwarra and Biotrader demonstrate how locally led approaches can help build a more resilient future for people, communities and the environment.

Biotrader is launching at the end of November. Register now for the launch on November 25th at midday QLD time, 1PM NSW and VIC.
