Nuffield Scholars Announced – Investing in the next generation of Ag

The next generation of Australian agricultural leaders is preparing to take their research overseas, with 14 Nuffield Australia Scholars announced at the National Conference in Darwin on 9 September 2026.

Five of the scholars are funded by the Future Drought Fund and are from South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria.

Queensland scholars tackling industry challenges

Queensland is also well represented in the full 2027 cohort, with four scholars exploring opportunities to investigate sugarcane circular bio-economy models, find ways to increase the value of wild-caught prawns and reduce waste, find alternative pathways for next generation producers to establish farming businesses, and understand international approaches to water harvesting, storage and distribution in extensive beef enterprises.

These research topics reflect the diversity of Queensland’s agricultural industries and the importance of finding practical, locally relevant solutions to the challenges facing producers.

The 2027 Nuffield Australia National Conference carried the theme Beyond the horizon: leading agriculture’s next frontier, highlighting the role of leadership, innovation and global knowledge exchange in shaping the future of agriculture.

The TNQ Drought Hub congratulates all 2027 Nuffield Scholars on their achievement and looks forward to seeing how their research and shared learnings contribute to a more resilient, productive and sustainable agricultural sector.
